Our library is part of the project put in effect by the Hellenic Ministry of Education act 1.3.c and 1.4.b for School Libraries, which included the construction and function of 499 libraries within Secondary Education school units, evenly distributed throughout the country. Starting in 1996, the project was financed by national budgets and by the 2nd European Community Support Framework.

The School Library project was one of the most important measures involved, as it promotes the institution of the library inside the school and outwardly to the local community. It should be made clear, though, that school libraries are not public or municipal libraries and have a whole different role to play inside the school unit.

The first 49 School Libraries were staffed with library scientists and functioned as a pilot programme. They were created by the National Youth Foundation ("EIN") and the School Building Organisation ("OSK") in collaboration with the National Documentation Centre ("EKT").
The 400 libraries that followed, among which is ours, were part of the project's development. Staffed with Secondary Education teachers, they were materialised by Universities or Technological Institutes, by OSK, EIN in collaboration with EKT.

The Pireas University was responsible for the SALAMIS project, that contained 25 libraries, including our own. 10 were made in East Attiki, 3 in West Attiki and 12 in Pireas.

Being the materialisation quango, Pireas University's mission was to:

•  provide and place the basic collection of documents which included printed, audiovisual, multimedia and software material

•  train teachers in librarianship basics, in library organisation and development and in the ABEKT automated library sofware for WINDOWS platforms

•  support library staff (librarians or teachers trained for the post)

•  train library users

•  publicize the library's importance in education in and out of school

The project was completed at the end of the year 2000. Since then, all library expenses are covered by the School Committee.
