Attiki Road Motorway, exit 2

The safety of drivers, passengers and vehicles constitutes a basic priority of the Attiki Odos. The Motorway was designed under strict safety-related technical specifications, including a Hard Shoulder in either direction, traffic island, skid-resistant asphalt pavement of high durability, dense lighting, fencing etc.
The motorway's special control systems along with the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) are a major contribution to the road safety features, since they enable traffic monitoring along the entire length of the motorway, on a 24-hour basis.
The Traffic Management Centre (TMC) detects promptly any problems and incidents occurring on the motorway, through closed circuit TV cameras, road pavement sensors and special CO / opacity measurement systems installed in tunnels. Moreover, it coordinates emergency intervention and road assistance procedures by using modern electronic equipment, such as the following:

  • TETRA system, enabling communication with the patrol units and emergency intervention teams,

  • Electronic variable message signs, providing drivers with information as to the observance of basic road conduct rules,

  • Tunnel ventilation systems, which are automatically activated in order to remove smoke and other dangerous emissions from tunnels,

  • Direct contact with the Traffic Police (there is a special department whose exclusive duty is to provide policing services to the Attiki Odos Motorway), the Fire Brigade, the ΕΚΑΒ etc.
The Attiki Odos Motorway has a special maintenance team, executing the required works and taking all necessary measures in order to ensure the good condition of the motorway, namely road pavement maintenance, signing, cleaning etc.
According to the Highway Code (KOK), pedestrians, animal-riders, non-motorised vehicles (e.g. bicycles) and generally vehicles that cannot exceed 50 km/h on a level road, are not allowed on the Attiki Odos, for safety reasons and in order to ensure good operation conditions on the motorway.
